The Solution We propose a minor, low-cost administrative update to the state's online business portal. This initiative would add a voluntary, self-reporting checkbox for Veteran ownership during initial business formation and annual report filings. Why This Works Zero Bureaucracy: The system is purely voluntary and self-reported. The state will not require or audit verification paperwork (such as DD-214 forms), ensuring no new administrative or compliance burdens are placed on state agencies. Smart Data: This simple metric provides immediate, actionable statistical insights into Veteran-owned business trends, helping economic development groups better serve those who served our country. Cost-Effective: This change requires a minor IT update to the existing digital filing platform. It eliminates the need to create a new state agency, certification registry, or costly oversight program. Proven Success: Other states, including Texas and Missouri, successfully utilize self-reporting mechanisms to accurately map, understand, and champion their Veteran business communities.
